This is the classic green bean casserole recipe popular on so many Thanksgiving menus. It's so simple anyone can make it. Making and heating only takes 30 minutes. All that is required is mixing the ingredients together. Then just wait to eat this delicious green bean casserole.

Green Bean Casserole Recipe Additions, Substitutions, and Variations

Mix and match the addition suggestions, but I wouldn't try all of them at once, of course.

Green Bean Casserole Recipe Addition Suggestions- 1 cup grated Cheddar cheese, 1 cup Parmesan cheese, 1 cup American cheese, Can creamed or regular corn, Dash of soy sauce, Dash of black or white pepper, 1/4 - 1/2 cup sour cream, Crumbled bacon or bacon bits, 1/2 - 1 teaspoon garlic powder, Drained can of water chestnuts, Drained can of sliced mushrooms, Dash of Worcestershire sauce

Green Bean Casserole Recipe Substitutions- Cream of chicken soup instead of cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 cup toasted Almonds instead of French fried onions or in addition to French fried onions, Cream of celery soup instead of cream of mushroom soup, Caramelized onions instead of canned French fried onions, Cauliflower instead of green beans, Roasted Garlic Cream of Mushroom soup instead of regular cream of mushroom soup

4 cups fresh green beans for the canned green beans- Cook for 30-45 minutes, or long enough for the beans to become tender.

2 (9 oz) packages frozen green beans for the canned green beans and cook for 45 minutes to one hour. (Thaw green beans first by running under hot water.) This is not really recommended, as the frozen green beans take so long to become tender. But in a pinch, if this is all you have and you are able to wait it out, it works.

Green Bean Casserole Recipe Variations- Save half of the French fried onions when mixing the ingredients together. Halfway through cooking time, add the rest of the French fried onions to the top of the green bean casserole.

Use fresh or frozen cauliflower instead of green beans.
