A Little About Alice in Wonderland Quotes
Alice in Wonderland was written by Lewis Carroll almost 150 years ago in 1865. The actual name of the classic book is Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. One of my favourite surreal stories, thank you. :)
Is there any mention of Lemmings in "Alice"?
Great quotes .... I really love (and use often in my business) the one about which road I should take.
I wonder if anyone has ever figured out a reasonable answer to the riddle 'why is a raven like a writing desk?' Nice hub on one of my favourite books!
Cheshire cat
" Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought him back."
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.
What an excellent collection of Alice quotes you have put together. I have been planning for a while to get the above quote tattooed on my side.
Which road do I take?"
"Where do you want to go?"
"I don't know," Alice answered.
"Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter.”
Ingenious. Loveeee Lewis Carroll.
im getting,
impassible. nothings impossible
tattooed on my chest. :)
Now it's being made into a live action movie, again.
our school is doing a play on alice and the wonderland and i need to make a display board. I was thinking of making one with the famous quotes. Any suggestions on how to do it
I think my favorite (and most used) quote from Alice in Wonderland (and variations) is the Cheshire Cat:
"I'm mad, you're mad, we're all mad here."
I'm also fond of the wise old caterpillar when he says:
"Keep your temper." That one's a rule to live by, right there :D
Thanks For The Help!
I think that one of the quotes that is most memberal and stuck out most to me, that i have followed most was by the Cheshire Cat after Alice asks which road she ought to take:
"Therefore it doesn't matter"
Meaning
If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there, otherwise if you don't have a dream then anything will do,
I thought that had a lot of sentamental value...
you can choose, but it doesn't matter...
I'm 15, im in love with this book. When i was younger i liked it because of the adventures. Now im a huge batman comic Nerd. The batman comics use all of these quotes in different comics. I love it because i know where the quotes come from. Now that im reading the quotes from Batman, and at the fact that the villians are saying them, makes the quotes sound insane, now when i watch the movie or read the book, its insanity, but it makes it so interesting.
can you give me the exact 6 impossible things that Alice said in the movie? i really love the movie.. =] thanks
animals can talk
there is a wonderland
i will slay the jabberwokie (ok can't spell, i know)
I believe thats three of them but can't remember the rest:)
A potion to make me smaller, a cake to make me larger
6 Impossible Things Before Battle W/ Jabberwocky
1. Potions can make me smaller
2. Cakes can make me larger
3. Animals can talk
4. Cats can disappear
5. There is a Wonderland
6. I can defeat the Jabberwocky
I really like when the mad hatter says the poem about the jabberwocky does any one know it off by heart?
And also when the mad hatter says:
Any one can go by road or rail but everyone knows that the absolute best way to go is by hat. (i dont think thats exactly right but, yeah)
Hello!
Thanks Nicole, I have been searching high and low for the 6 impossible things that Alice said in e movie.
Love the movie, awesome! ^^
does anyone know Alice's dads response in the film when she asks if you is mad? Alice then repeats it to the mad hatter. It is driving ME MAD .
I think it goes like this:
It only takes someone to dream up someone who is mad..SOmething along those lines XD
for someone to think up someone mad, they have to be mad themselevs??? some close to that... I LLLLOOOVVVVEEDD the movie, just saw it. It was Great! a must see.
"Have I gone mad?"
"I'm afraid so. You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are."
I really love the movie specially on 3D the jabberwocky almost looks exactly as the drawing in the book
Thank you
love the quotesand the movie
for someone to think up someone mad. they need to be half as mad themselves. ^^
Hey
I was wondering what alice's father says at the beginning of the movie about something being possible to the people he is having a meeting with, if someone could reply to me pretty soon i would love them forever !
I was wondering the same thing. Its something like:
"The only was to achieve the impossible is to believe it's possible."
I'm not sure if that's right, but it sounds like it.
i think i know the answer in the Mad Hatter's riddle "why is a raven like a writing desk?" i got this from one site i really love..
"Enquiries have been so often addressed to me, as to whether any answer to the Hatter’s Riddle can be imagined, that I may as well put on record here what seems to me to be a fairly appropriate answer, viz: "Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front!" This, however, is merely an afterthought; the Riddle as originally invented, had no answer at all."
note: the spelling of never is spelled "nevar" the backward spelling for raven.. it was intende by Carroll to spell it that way but later on the spelling changed to never.. probably an editor changed it because he/she thinks it was wrong but didn't even thought maybe Carroll wanted it that way..
I found out that there is an answer to the riddle:
"Why is a raven like a writing desk?"
The answer I found was Poe wrote on both. I don't know if that is the right answer, but it is one that makes sense. That kinda makes me think it is wrong since most of Carroll's book made none.
anyone know what the hatter whispered to alice at the end of the movie?
NO! THATS DRIVING ME BONKERS!
thanks for such a nice review. It really reminds me of all the wondeful thoughts
this page is great! thank you
does anyone know the exact quote of when alice wants to go rescue the mad hatter, and shes told not to diverge from her path but she says that she makes her own path?
i loved what she said but i cant remember the exact words
we are all mad
how is a raven like a writing desk
anyone know what the hatter whispered to alice at the end of the movie?
AND THE exact quote for someone to think up someone mad, they have to be mad themselevs???
I absolutely lovee this story. I love how crazy and symbolic it is, and the movie i think was done wonderfully. I have soo many quotes.
"Your'e mad. Bonkers. Off your head. But i'll tell you a secret... all the best people are."
"How could a dream be so very real?"
"I sometimes believe as many as six impossible things before breakfast."
"She was falling down the rabbit hole."
"Curiouser and curiouser"
"Not Hardly"
"Alice had no idea where she was, but that had been true ever since she fell down the rabbit hole."
"Alice was quite alone."
"It's absolutely Alice! You're absolutely Alice! I'd know you anywhere. I'd know him anywhere!"
"It's all because I was obliged to kill time waiting for your return. You're terribly late you know. Naughty. Well, anyway time became quite offended and stopped altogether."
"Time can be funny in dreams."Fairfarren all"
"Your not the same as you were before," he said. "Your were much more...muchier...you've lost your muchness."
"WHat is the hatter with me"
Have you any idea why a raven is like a writing desk? I dont like it here, it's terribly crowded. Have I gone mad?"
"i'm afraid so, you've gone entirely bonkers. But i'll tell you a secret...all the best people are."
"i'll be fine as soon as I wake up."
"I said you were not hardly alice," he corrected her. "But you're much more her now. In fact, you're Almost Alice" :)
"Sometimes I forget this is all just a dream."
"The hatter's head...had disappeared."
"And now here I am...still in one piece...amd i'm rather glad about that now that i'm seeing you again...I would have regretted not seeing you again...especially not that your you and the proper size... and it's a good size...it's a great size...it's a right proper Alice size."
The Hatter looked bemused. "You still believe this is a dream. Do you?
"Of course. This has all come from my own mind."
The Hatter thought about that for a moment.
"Which would mean that I'm Not real."
I'm afraid so," said Alice, shaking her head. "You're just a figment of my imagination. I would dream up someone who's half mad."
"Yes, yes. But you would have to be half mad to dream me up." The Hatter observed
"I must be, then." Alice laughed.
"I'll miss you when I wake up."
"Alice," said the White Queen, "you cannot live your life to please others. The choice must be yours because when you step out to face that creature, you will step out alone."
"Nothing was ever accomplished with tears."
"I'm his daughter. Alice Kingsleigh"
"Alice at last!" cried the caterpillar
"you were just as dim-witted the first time you were here. You called it 'Wonderland,' as I recall."
"It wasn't a dream at all! It was a memory! This place is real!"
"The mad hatter leaned against the wall, waiting. he knew Alice. He believed in her. he refused to give up hope."
This is impossible" she whispered to the Hatter. "Only if you believe it is."
"Sometimes I believe as many as six impossible things before breakfast."
"Six impossible things. COunt them Alice,
One! There's a potion that can make you shrink.
Two! And a cake that can make you grow.
Three! Animals can talk.
Four! Cats can dissapear
Five! THERE IS A PLACE CALLED WONDERLAND
Six! I can slay the Jabberwocky!!
"You could stat, " he said, his face warm and full of promise.
"What and idea." Alice said softly. "A crazy, mad, wonderful idea."
"But I can't She said to the Hatter, taking his hand. "There are questions I have to answer. Things I have to do."
"I'll be back before you know it. She promised the hatter
"You wont remember me." He replied
"How could I forget? Hatter...Why is a raven like a writing desk?"
"I haven't the slightest idea, Fairfarren, Alice"
Six months later a beautiful monarch butterfly with blue-tinged wongs landed on her shoulder. She smiled, one memory breaking through as clear as day.
"Hello Absolem," she said. :)
oh my goodness. the tim burton film was amazing. the book is perfection, and the original movie is superb!! i love that last quote about the hatter asking alice to stay, it always makes me teary.
Before Alice asks her dad if she is mad, she says something like, "Have I gone 'round the bend?" It made me laugh. Does anyone know if that's the exact quote?
alice was and still is my favorite girl
I love the march hare in the tim Burton movie
For the Person with a Question about the Poem the Mad Hatter recites in the Tim Burton version of Alice in Wonderland, I had to learn and act out this poem in High School about 13 years ago... lol. Dark. Enjoy!
Mewlips
The shadows where the Mewlips dwell
Are dark and wet as ink,
And slow and softly rings their bell,
As in the slime you sink.
You sink into the slime, who dare
To know upon their door,
While down the grinning gargoyles state
And noisome waters pour.
Beside the rotting river-strand
The drooping willows weep,
And gloomily the gorcrows stand
Croaking in their sleep.
Over the Merlock Mountains a long and weary way,
In a mouldy valley where the trees are grey,
By a dark pool's borders without wind or tide,
Moonless and sunless, the Mewlips hide.
The cellars where the Mewlips sit
Are deep and dank and cold
With single sickly candle lit;
And there they count their gold.
Their walls are wet, their ceilings drip;
Their feet upon the floor
Go softly with a squish-flap-flip,
As they sidle to the door.
They peep out slyly; through a crack
Their feeling fingers creep,
And when they've finished, in a sack
Your bones they take to keep.
Beyond the Merlock Mountains, a long and lonely road,
Through the spider-shadows and the marsh of Tode,
and through the wood of hanging tees and the gallows-weed,
You go to find the Mewlips--and the Mewlips feed.
Great Alice in Wonderland quotes.
i love the book it is the best book!!!
my friend in school is alice now she is the best friend ever!!!:)
You know the "Why is a raven like a writing desk" riddle?
I know it was never intended to have an answer, but I found one that fits XD
"They both have inky black quills" :)
Alice & Through the Looking Glass have been my favorites since childhood with Alice as my #1 favorite of all.
A few years ago I learned that Alice had been John Lennon's favorite book as well and I always found that I had the same sense of whimsy as John did - he was a tad bit older and English and I was from the Colonies, as they say. So many great quotes and the Disney cartoon really makes the book come alive for me. I have a BS and a JD and I have studied much philosophy, theology and law. So, unfortunately, I am a grownup. But Alice captures me and the quotes are wonderful. Edward Lear is nice but Alice is special. Maybe the two books should be mandatory at every undergraduate school so that some folks wouldn't take themselves so seriously.
what did he say to the cat when the hatter was mad? it was something in a different language

very interesting hub. thanks
I have used the Cheshire's quote about which road to take many times in class. To me it means that without a vision, you may wander aimlessly for a very long time and never achieve anything.
