The Recording Academy awards Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards to performers that have made outstanding contributions to the fields of music and recording during their lifetime.

The very first person to win a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award was Bing Crosby in 1962. Bing Crosby was a popular actor as well as singer. Bing also won an Oscar for Best Actor in Going My Way in 1945.

Frank Sinatra became the second person to be awarded with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1965. Other winners of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award during the 1960s were Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Irving Berlin.

Very few Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards were handed out during the 70s. The only people to receive them were Elvis Presley in 1971, and Louis Armstrong and Mahalia Jackson in 1972.

More Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards were handed out during the 80s. Some of the more well-known Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winners were Fred Astaire in 1981, Chuck Berry in 1984, Benny Goodman and The Rolling Stones in 1986, Enrico Caruso, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Woody Herman, Billie Holiday, B.B. King, and Hank Williams, Sr. in 1987. Well-known Grammy Lifetime Achievement winners for 1989 were Fred Astaire, Dizzy Gillespie, Lena Horne, and Bessie Smith.

Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards were given out much more frequently during the 90s. 1990 Grammy Lifetime Achievement winners were Nat King Cole, Miles Davis, Vladimir Horowitz, and Paul McCartney.

James Brown Tribute - Winner of 1992 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award

Marian Anderson, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and Kitty Wells received the honor in 1991. James Brown, John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix, and Muddy Waters all received Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards in 1992.

Popular winners in 1993 were Chet Atkins, Little Richard, and Bill Monroe. 1994 winners included Bill Evans, Aretha Franklin, and Arthur Rubinstein. Patsy Cline, Peggy Lee, Henry Mancini, Curtis Mayfield, and Barbra Streisand were honored in 1995. Winners in 1996 were Dave Brubeck, Marvin Gaye, Georg Solti, and Stevie Wonder. 1997 had many Grammy Lifetime Achievement winners. Some of the widely recognized names were The Everly Brothers, Judy Garland, Buddy Holly, and Frank Zappa. 1998 Grammy Lifetime honorees were Bo Diddley, The Mills Brothers, Roy Orbison, and Paul Robeson.

1999 Grammy Lifetime Achievement winners were all household names- Johnny Cash, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Smokey Robinson, and Mel Torme.

2000 winners for Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards were Harry Belafonte, Woody Guthrie, John Lee Hooker, Mitch Miller, and Willie Nelson. 2001 included The Beach Boys, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis, Jr., Bob Marley, and The Who. 2002 Lifetime Achievement winners were Count Basie, Rosemary Clooney, Perry Como, Al Green, and Joni Mitchell. 2003 awards went to Etta James, Johnny Mathis, Glenn Miller, Tito Puente, and Simon and Garfunkel. There were many Grammy Lifetime Achievement awards from 2004-2008.
