Updated on July 18, 2011

Home Remedies for Cough and Colds Have Been Around for Centuries

A persistent cough can be one of the most irritating cold or flu symptoms. Consistent coughing interferes with work, sleep, everything. If you don't like to take prescription or OTC medications, or for some reason can't take them, here are some home remedies for cough that may work. Some of these natural cough remedies have been around for ages.

One of the Best Natural Cough Remedies

One of the best home remedies for cough is a bit tedious, but it is an excellent natural cough home remedy. Chop up a raw onion very fine. You want the juice from the chopped onion. Mix one teaspoon each of onion juice and honey. Cough symptoms will be reduced immensely. Take this homemade cough syrup twice a day. It's an excellent cough remedy.

Grapes and Raisins as Home Remedies for Cough?

Grapes and/or raisins both can cure cough. Grape juice and raisins act as natural expectorants. It usually takes a couple of days.

This natural cough remedy is simple. Just drink grape juice laced with about a tablespoon of honey several times a day.

Natural honey cough remedies are plentiful. There are two main reasons honey is often used in natural cough remedies. The added honey works as a natural antibiotic. Honey also coats the throat to lessen irritation of the lining.

You can make a raisin cough syrup. Grind raisins first. Put equal parts of ground raisins, sugar, and double the amount of water in a saucepan. Heat it until it gets thick like syrup. Take 4 teaspoons at night before going to sleep and during the day when the cough is persistent.

A Simple Honey Cough Remedy

Another honey cough remedy is effective and easy to make. Just mix 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of lemon or lime juice into some water. Drink it. Repeat this 2 or 3 times throughout the day for natural cough relief.

Of Course Garlic Is One of the Best Natural Cough Remedies!

Another one of the best natural cough remedies involves that old standby, garlic. Chop three cloves of garlic up very fine. Add it to a pan with a cup of water. Bring it to a boil. Turn off the heat. Add a tablespoon each of honey and lemon juice. Drink as soon as it is cool enough. You will be amazed at how quickly this home remedy for cough works.

Herbal Cough Remedies

Turmeric is a spice that works as an effective way to cure cough if it is a dry cough. It is easily found in the spice section at the grocery store. Take 1/2 teaspoon of ground turmeric in the morning and again at night as a natural herbal cough suppressant.

Another natural herbal cough remedy is ginger. Compounds in ginger help suppress coughs, plus ginger has antibacterial properties. Simply make a tea from ginger by grating raw ginger in water and warming it. Let it steep a few minutes, drain, and drink. Adding honey helps it taste better, coats a raw throat, and adds even more natural antibiotics to the mixture. Or even simpler, just buy some ginger tea.

One of the Oldest Home Remedies for Cough on Record

One of the oldest home remedies for cough is whiskey cough syrup. It has stuck around for so long because it's a very effective remedy for cough. This natural cough remedy is easy to make. Mix equal parts of whiskey (or brandy) and honey in a jar or other container that can be shaken. Top off with 5-6 drops of lemon juice. Shake the concoction until all of the ingredients have mixed together well. Take a teaspoon 4 times a day. Because of the alcohol content, do not give this natural cough remedy to kids.

Chronic Cough Warning

A chronic cough can be caused by many factors- cold, flu, virus, allergies, are just a few. If your cough doesn't go away in about a week, have it checked by a doctor.
