The Oreo Balls Recipe Is Great Because...

If you haven't tried Oreo balls, you're missing out. Oreo balls are a decadent, rich, delicious dessert . Most people make Oreo balls as a special treat for the holidays, especially Christmas. The Oreo balls recipe is sometimes referred to as the unappetizing title 'Reindeer Droppings' around Christmas time. I also like to make Oreo ball at Easter, because they remind me of chocolate Easter eggs.

If made correctly, the Oreo balls recipe will result in a slightly crunchy outer coating of either chocolate or white chocolate. The center is a gooey, delicious delight made up of crushed Oreo cookies and cream cheese.

There are several reasons why I like to make Oreo balls. First, of course, Oreo balls are sinfully delicious.

Second, they are rich enough that most people will eat only a few. So Oreo balls make great treats for parties or get togethers because they go a long way.

Third, the Oreo balls recipe is pretty inexpensive to make. Since this recipe makes about 3 or 4 dozen, it is a bargain.

The Oreo balls recipe consists of four simple ingredients. Most of us have at least some of the ingredients sitting in our kitchens already.

This is a no-bake dessert recipe! I love these types of recipes, especially during the holidays. It frees up precious space in my ovens. Even though I have two, I never seem to have enough room.

This is a make ahead dessert recipe! The Oreo balls recipe can be made ahead in a couple of ways. First, leave the Oreo cookies mixture in the refrigerator or freezer until you are ready to dip them in chocolate. Or go ahead and make them and then put them back in the refrigerator or freezer to eat whenever you like. The Oreo balls will keep in the freezer for about 3 or 4 months. Be sure to store Oreo balls chilled in an airtight container or sealed plastic bag.

The last reason that I keep the Oreo balls recipe in my recipe file is because Oreo balls are easy to make. And the Oreo balls recipe is very versatile. It can also be adapted to contain less fat and calories. See below for variations on this easy recipe.

Oreo Balls Recipe Ingredients

Oreo Balls Recipe Ingredients

  • 8 ounces softened cream cheese or whipped cream cheese
  • 18 ounces package of Oreo cookies, crushed (crush the entire cookie- don't remove the filling!)
  • 2 cups semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon shortening

Oreo Balls Recipe Instructions

Mix cream cheese with electric mixer until fluffy. Add the crushed Oreos and beat on high until well mixed. Chill for at least 2 hours in the freezer. Then roll Oreo cookie mix into one inch Oreo Balls.

Next, melt the chocolate chips and shortening with a double boiler or in the microwave.

Dip the Oreo balls completely into the melted chocolate using tongs or a toothpick.

Put on wax paper. After the Oreo balls harden, keep them in the refrigerator.

Makes about 3 or 4 dozen Oreo Balls, depending on the size

Oreo Balls Recipe Tips and Variations

Oreo Balls variations: Use melted almond bark or white chocolate chips instead of chocolate chips to dip the Oreo Balls.

Try different versions of sandwich cookies to make Oreo Balls- Oreo mint cookies, peanut butter sandwich cookies, or vanilla sandwich cookies are some delicious choices.

Don't use double stuffed Oreos for Oreo Balls. Be sure to use regular Oreo cookies.

To make the Oreo Balls a little less unhealthy, substitute low-fat Oreo cookies and low-fat cream cheese.

Don't skip the shortening. It makes the chocolate slightly thinner and smoother. It is much easier to use with the added shortening.

Oh My!

I have a son, who truly believes that Oreo cookies are one of the four main food groups! He turns grouchy when we are not only out of milk, but more importantly - OREO COOKIES! LOL

I will admit it... I have never heard of this recipe before. But most certainly I will make these this week while he is on Spring break and I will report back from the best critic I know when it comes to anything with the name "Oreo" attached to it.

These sound wonderful... and they better be! Or we are both in trouble... LOL

I must try these! I love to make the Reese's peanut butter balls like this so these should be just as easy. The only problem I have had with the Reese's balls is keeping them from getting eaten before they are dipped. I would think I will have the same problem with these, right? LOL. Thanks for the recipe! Adding this to my recipe folder from the HubLove contest!

My school teaches the students how to make Oreo Balls in Advanced Foods class. Those things are amazing.

Try using 'lollipop sticks' and these oreo balls are easy to eat and they look nice on a tray! The chocolate melts nicely and they aren't as messy when they are at room temperature.

Hi - I had these recently at a employee luncheon...they were great so of course I had to make them. It's a done deal and their in the fridge right now. If anybody out there has made them I need an opinion. I had a difficult time dipping in the chocolate but managed with a toothpick in each one. Then I ran out of the chocolate chip dip and had to melt another cup of them to finish, 40 balls in all. Any suggestions?

henryswatts 2 years ago

haha, I never thought I'd see people arguing over a candy recipe.

Kat 2 years ago

"Chill for at least 2 hours in the freezer. Then roll Oreo cookie mix into one inch Oreo Balls."

Do we really chill in the freezer? Or did you mean refrigerator? Seems like they'd be too hard to roll if they were chilled in the freezer. Please clarify. Thanks.

DB 2 years ago

Are you supposed to remove the cookie filling before crumbling up the cookies?

Rebecca 2 years ago

Just a curiosity question:

You state that we shouldn't use dubble stuffed Oreos for this receipe, but then suggest using Oreo mint cookies and the peanut butter variety right above it... Those are double stuffed variety.

So is there a reason you suggest not using double stuffed? Have you actually tried double stuffed with poor results? Have you tried the "flavored" varieties of Oreos with good results?

I'm thinking I'd like to try the mint Oreos, but I'm hesitating because they are double stuffed.

Any insight?

Jess 2 years ago

Personally, I stick them in the refrigerator, as they do get a little hard to roll in even balls when in the freezer. Also, when you use the double stuff oreos, the will 'melt' faster than when you only use regular oreos. When they begin to come to room temp using double stuff they kinda lose shape and begin to look weird... Yikes! Good luck!

Paige 2 years ago

Probably a stupid question...but i was just curious. When you crush up the oreos, do you take out the white filling before or crush them with it inside?

ME 2 years ago

i love these

my aunt makes these every christmas along with carmel cheetos..i know they sound gross but OMGOSH they are amazing!!

We made these for a bake sale fundraiser, and sold every single one at a high price. They are wonderful, to say the least!

Nancy 2 years ago

You do not have to take the white out of the Oreos before making them.

I actually just put the oreos in my food processor until they are crushed up and then add the cream cheese...no fuss...no muss!! It is very easy that way!

SydKidd 2 years ago

my friends mom made these all the time and i didnt know how to do it but i figured i should try to make them myself and they were kinda tricky with the cream cheese but hopefully they come out good. they are in the freezer right now "chillen"

kim 2 years ago

What happens if. You use double stuffed oreos?

ilovecandy 2 years ago

double stuffed melt in room temp causing them to take on odd shapes. don't use as much shortening and that wont happen.

Nancy 2 years ago

My great-nephew's girlfriend brought them to my sister's on Thanksgiving and we all LOVED them and her. First time I'd met her but I told her as far as I was concerned, she was part of the family!!

Cally 2 years ago

You don't need shortening, too fatty, use milk or cream in the chocolate it gives it the same consitency.

i made them tonight to test it, and oh my word they're amazing!

ginamarie 2 years ago

Been making these for the past 2 years OMG the hit of every party. I switch it up a bit, chocolate oreo's dip in white chocolate, and then white oreo's dip in dark chocolate. I use the almond bark chocolate, and I never tried adding the shortening. A trick I did find was to make sure the oreo balls were very cold before dipping into chocolate , other wise cookie will fall apart. I let the balls set for a hour before dipping....just a small tip.

Sarah Spencer 2 years ago

I just had one of these today and it was to die for!!!!!!! Unbelievable. My husband didn't want me to have one for fear I would start making them...and he is diabetic. Sorry Hubby the oreos win out!

Angela 2 years ago

I had these at a work party and they were wonderful. I decided to make them for my family X-mas party tomorrow and this is the one and only time I will make them! They are very time consuming, messy and expensive to make. One recipe made 45 balls (which won't go very far with my family) and cost $7!

Jessica 2 years ago

Last year in one of my oreo ball batches I tried adding some cream to make the chocolate easier to work with. DO NOT attempt this. It makes it so that the chocolate won't harden. You will end up with sticky balls of goo that nobody wants to eat. Shortening is really the best solution to this problem. Thanks for all the input! I'm really excited about my cookie exchange this year!

Tina 2 years ago

My kids love the Oreo balls...every year they ask me to make them, especially around the holidays. The school that I work for practically beg me to make them. They are so delicious. I have used regular choc and white choc for the coating.

Kerry 23 months ago

I just melt some chocolate bark coating instead of using the chocolate chips and shortening. MUCH, MUCH easier...and WAY faster! Just put some squares of the bark in my 3-cup glass measuring cup...microwave it until its melted (stirring evrey 10 secons or so)...easy peazy lemon squeezy!

I made these acording to the instructions. They Did not turn out exactly right. They need more detail when it comes to the melted chocolate, rolling the balls, and how much the oreos need to be crushed. These were very stressfull to make.

Sprinkle with the reserved cookie crumbs.. Soo easy and they look great someone asked me where I bought them. Refrig till serving. I didnt have a problem and it was 90 degrees and humid

I have made these for the past couple of years and they are always a HIT!!!!!!! This is now the one thing I am required to bring to family functions....lol. Simple and taste great I love the mint but the regular oreo's are great to. If you are in a pinch and need to fix something cheap and easy this is great and they go a long way unless you have my bunch...lol Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Riverviewmama 14 months ago

I've made these many times and they are very delicious. As only eating a couple....well I definitely need to contain myself and my kids when it comes to these. They are a welcome treat during that not so enjoyable time of the month as well when you have cravings late in the evening!! LOL. A must for any get together. Easy to make and everyone enjoys them. We opt for them as well due to my daughter's nut allergies so peanut butter balls are not an option for us.

GrandmaK 14 months ago

These have been a holiday favorite for a few years - my only tip is to shave about 2 Tablespoons of wax(yes wax, the kind you put on top of jelly jars) to the chocolate for coating to make it a little shiny and it sets up a little better.

Juli 14 months ago

I bought these at a dessert auction at my church and they are Heaven in a ball. Love these and plan on making them for my goodie boxes for family and friends this holiday season.

Nikki 14 months ago

Students at school made these & shared some with me. They are fabulous!!! The students called them "Crack Balls" because they are better them crack. I plan to make them for this year's holiday goodie bags for neighbors!

HYager 14 months ago

I have made these many times before. I definitely suggest using the Chocolate Almond Bark instead of chocolate chips and shortening. The bark comes in white, milk, and dark chocolate varieties and it hardens as it cools making it much easier to use and very yummy. I love the idea of rolling the dipped balls in crushed oreo crumbs. That would give it a different texture. Sounds great!

Kimmi 14 months ago

I've had these yummies at work parties and such, they're fantastic. I wanted to add them to my cookies trays that I give as gifts but I had a concern. Should they be stored in the fridge? Any thoughts?

At my school, students go crazy for oreo balls.

I met this guy once who called it 'Jesus Poop' and it stuck to me. Hahaha

Everytime I see someone with them I yell out 'jesus poop!'

They are soooooo good!

Ashley 13 months ago

Wow...so these are really good and I use white chocolate chip morsels by nestle and at christmas I use green and red food coloring and make red and green oreo balls. and FYI seriously?1?1....this is supposed to be about recipes not the freakin want ads!! why do people feel the need to post random freakin comments tryin to hook up with people?? Get a LIFE!!

But really though, the oreo balls are AWESOME!!!

Heather 13 months ago

Use 1/3 stick of gulf wax instead of shortening... it makes the coating shiny and sets better and adds a nice little crunch. YUM YUM!

jojo 13 months ago

these are defintily going on my dinner table for our christmas feast!

Just whipped up a batch but had the smaller package of Oreos - really now - WHY would they even have a smaller size package ? But added a few Chips Ahoy to make up the difference with an extra T. of cream cheese - yum-ohh

These are the best thing that I have ever tasted.. I sampled one from a friend, I couldn't believe how good..

So I'm so glad this recipe is on the net.. I really can't wait to make them... Again thanks alot !!

Bonnie 12 months ago

I want to mail these to another state. Will they hold up and not spoil?

jay 12 months ago

They probably will spoil because of the cream cheese. Maybe if you try substituting it for something else, or make cake balls instead? They're almost exactly the same as oreo balls, except you use cake instead and no cream cheese.

My friend said to google this recipe and this looks like the best one to try....THANKS! :D

well i live in canada and i was wondering where exactly i can buy oreo cookie mix? b.t.w is there any other substitute for oreo cookie mix?

Julie 11 months ago

I love these things!I wanted to make some but I didn't have the recipe but now I do!THANKS:D

Lauren  10 months ago

Do you have to dip the oreo ball's in the chocolate so it hardens or can you just roll them up and keep them in the fridge. Or can you drizzle the chocolate over the top not completely dipping the entire oreo ball in the chocolate?

I can't want to see how these turn out. I had them at church a few years ago, tried to make them and DISASTER!! I didn't add cream cheese or freeze them before dipping. I think this will make all the difference!! THANKS FOR SHARING and GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!

Amber 2 months ago

These are a wonderful and easy dessert to make around the holidays! And they're so yummy! Kids & Adults both love these. Instead of shortening, I use butter and it works great. Easy, fun and so tasty! :)

This has been a family favorite for years. I now make so.e using the mint oreos... OMG... soooo good!

Dawn 7 weeks ago

WHAT A DISASTER. The cookie will leave brown crumbs in the white chocolate. The white coating doesn't cover evenly and looks horrible. They fall off the toothpicks, the cookies will fall apart. I threw mine out..too embarrassed to take them to work.....

gkprincess 7 weeks ago

maybe if u add some maraschino cherries in the center?think it would be great!im going to try them and post again...

steve 2 weeks ago

Up here in the NW we call them Jesus droppings at Easter. Yum they are heavenly.
